Graphic design and artwork have been part of man's environmental aesthetic and decoration since the prehistoric period. Early man absorbed and expressed these concepts intuitively to transform his social environment to what it is now. It is this aesthetic consciousness that distinguishes man from animals. Evidence of this can be seen in cave and rock decorations. As a result, in this technological age, man has the obligation to shape, tend, and decorate his buildings to make the environment attractive by erecting graphic design pieces and artwork such as paintings, sculptural pieces, mural designs, wall hangings, etc. In Nigeria, this action and style is not omitted in public buildings. The buildings are decorated with graphics and artwork to create beauty and tell stories about the rich cultural heritage of the Nigerians. The background of public decoration was transferred to this present generation from the wall decoration of the cave men. This paper examines the philosophy behind the erection of graphic design, artworks, and sculptural pieces that decorate public places and buildings in Nigeria and the impact of these on the environmental aesthetic. The paper concludes that these concepts stand as vital components in achieving a sustainable built environment, and that beauty of the Nigerian built environment can be sustained when art, design, and architecture are brought together.
