Abstrakt: The article highlights the role of fur trader Jacob Eelkens in the initial Dutch development of 17th century New Netherland. Topics discussed include an examination of his personality through his family relations in the Netherlands and France, the assumption that the move of the Eelkens family from Bois-le-Duc to Amsterdam was motivated by religion, and the economic activities of the Eelkens family with partners in the Netherlands and France.
