Abstrakt: This article reads Ingo Schulze's best-selling novel Simple Storys through the prism of postcolonial theory. Specificially, it interrogates popular constructions of the former GDR as a space which has been colonised by Western capitalism, and of the East German population as a people in the grip of a backward-looking Trotzidentität which must be overcome if the project of German unification is ever to be achieved.
