Background: A significant increase of acute rhinosinusitis, mainly maxilloethmoiditis, occurs during the summer season in Ukrainian resort areas, particularly in Odessa. Material and Methods: 106 patients with acute 'bathing' rhinosinusitis (ABRS) were examined in terms of microbiology, immunology, and allergy during 3 summers (2008-2010). The control group consisted of 51 patients who developed acute purulent rhinosinusitis during the 'nonbathing' season. Results: In the case of ABRS, fungi and mycotoxins were found to damage the mucous membranes of the nose and paranasal sinuses, making ABRS aggressive and fast. It occurred against a background of lowered immunity and sensitization. Conclusions: Traditional therapy for ABRS can quickly eliminate inflammation, but sensitization to mold remains high, leaving the possibility of re-development of inflammation. Incorporation of interferon inducers and anti-allergy agents substantially improves clinical and immunological indices of treatment efficacy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
