The purpose of this study was to describe the experiences of 43 healthcare professionals and administration staff regarding regional collaboration, process redesign and organization culture after a Regional Health Information System (RHIS) had been in use within their hospital district for five years. The data was collected by means of a thematic interview and analyzed using inductive content analysis. Regional health information exchange (HIE) had improved regional collaboration. Coordination of care had improved through regional co-operation, although problems still occurred. The use of the RHIS and electronic patient recording had improved communication within the hospital district. Changes in work practices had occurred, and the function had improved. The duplication of examination and treatments had decreased as the patient's previous health care institution information was available. The patient had more responsibility for their own further care when archiving data in the system. Attitudes within the organizations had become more positive, although some resistance to change towards RHIS did occur. There was commitment to using the RHIS and positive experiences assisted that it had been adopted as part of the workfow even if usage was not well established. The implementation of an RHIS is a long-term process, and even after five years clarity in working practices had not necessarily occurred. Improved efficiency is not possible if new and old working practices are in use at the same time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
