Peripartum cardiomyopathy is defined as development of cardiac failure in the last month of pregnancy or within 5 months of delivery, in the absence of an identifiable cause for cardiac failure. The aetiology of peripartum cardiomyopathy is currently unknown. However, there is increasing evidence for myocarditis arising from an infectious, autoimmune or idiopathic process. Cardiac disease is an indirect cause of maternal mortality, which has become important with the decrease in mortality in other conditions. |
