Abstrakt: Objective: To describe the cost of a prostate cancer educational program for 70 worksites in contrast to 59 church sites. Methods: Education and free screening were offered to 1,404 men, 69% African-American. Results: Worksites were 55% more cost-effective than church sites for men screened without previous history of DRE ($17.73 versus $27.56). There were eight prostate cancers detected at worksites versus two prostate cancers detected at church sites. Worksites were 269% more costeffective per man educated and diagnosed with prostate cancer than were church sites ($998 versus $3,687). Conclusion: This study documents that low-income and African-American men who are at risk for prostate cancer can be recruited into prostate cancer screening if community worksites and church sites are used.
