As increasing numbers of students compete to gain acceptance into quality graduate programs in the field of psychology, undergraduates with a strong research background who have articles presented at professional conferences and/or published in the professional literature possess skills that set them apart from other graduate school applicants and increase their chances of being accepted. Ambitious students in an Advanced Research Methods course at Worcester State College and an Advanced Research in Aging course at the College of the Holy Cross learn about all aspects of the research process by carrying out an actual study on an aging-related topic. The students then revise their work with assistance from the professors until it is suitable for presentation at a professional conference and/or for submission to editors of appropriate professional journals to be considered for publication. The structures of these two innovative courses are discussed herein, and a list of student research that has been presented and/or published as a direct result of the students having taken these research courses follows.
