Using data from the Current Population Survey March 2002 Supplement, this article provides a demographic profile of nonmetropolitan elderly in the United States. In addition to providing information on regional variation, the chapter examines nonmetro poverty and health among the elderly in detail. The chapter also reviews changes in the size of the elderly population in nonmetropolitan areas from 1970 through 2000 and in demographic characteristics from 1997 through 2002. This information provides a foundation for projections concerning future population changes among older persons in nonmetropolitan areas. The article concludes by discussing how social workers in local, rural communities can access and use U.S. Census and other data to improve health and social service delivery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
