Problem-based learning (PBL) was incorporated into the vocational training scheme (VTS) course for a group of 41 GP registrars (GPRs). This involved teaching the vocational trainers and the GPRs about PBL, designing PBL scenarios and then incorporating six PBL sessions into the six-month half-day release programme. Implementation was evaluated by means of a pre-PBL SWOT analysis, a questionnaire to all participating GPRs comparing the PBL sessions with the other educational activities on the course, a questionnaire focused on the PBL sessions themselves and a focus group of GPRs who had completed the course but also been taught with traditional methods.Evaluation focused on two specific issues: how well did PBL fulfil GPRs' learning needs and how well did PBL create a positive and enjoyable learning environment? Results indicated that the majority of GPRs found the PBL sessions largely fulfilled their learning needs, although they were concerned about the comprehensiveness of the material they covered. The majority of the GPRs found PBL an enjoyable and stimulating learning method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
