Understanding the risk factors of chronic kidney disease can slow disease progression to end stage renal disease. The National Kidney Foundation estimates 610,000 individuals in the United States will suffer from end stage renal disease (having less than 15% function of their kidneys) by 2010.Treatment options for end stage renal disease include hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, transplant, and no treatment.Occupational health nurses are in an ideal position to assist employees with understanding risk factors, the disease stages, treatment options, and challenges associated with end stage renal disease.
