When teacher educators approach their work in preservice methods classrooms, they may confront more than teaching and learning voices in those classrooms. The likelihood of this is increased in those contexts where the teacher educators maintain a commitment to education that addresses cultural issues. In this article, the authors introduce their commitment to social and political issues and do so in terms of 'voice'. They then provide examples of confrontations with their own and student voices that are grounded in race, class, gender and sexuality. The authors contend that teacher educators with such a commitment need to be attuned to the voices they wish to hear and bring into the conversation; be courageous in designing and enacting their pedagogy; and continuously (re)construct their own pedagogy in order to make social and cultural concepts an integral part of their pedagogy.
