This article presents a study which evaluated the impact on the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) on the rates of breastfeeding. The BFHI is based on the Ten Steps to Successful Breast-Feeding program which summarize the practices needed by maternity wards to support breastfeeding. There is a significant increase in breastfeeding and exclusive breastfeeding rates after the implementation of the BFHI. The effects of the BFHI were stronger in the underprivileged population. The benefits of breast milk are known to be greater at the lower socioeconomic level. |
