Abstrakt: Previous comparative trials suggest meprobamate as the hypnotic of first choice in old age. A double-blind control trial between meprobamate and flurazepam is reported. Flurazepam was statistically superior on a night observer's findings of the number of patients asleep at two and six hours after taking the drug. There were, however, more side effects with flurazepam and neither patients themselves nor hospital staff preferred it to meprobamate. The search for the ideal hypnotic for elderly people must continue. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
