Modern, surgical, early feeding protocols recommend that patients eat within a few hours of having elective colorectal surgery. However, in clinical practice, compliance with this protocol has been poor. Nurses deliver the care and spend the most time with patients after surgery. Yet, very little research has been carried out on the nurses’ perceptions toward the early feeding protocols. Since perceptions influence belief systems and behaviour, the aim of this research is to investigate whether there is a correlation between nurses’ perceptions of the protocol and the consequent poor patient compliance with it.
