Abstrakt: Kudoa thyrsites is a parasite that causes post-mortem myoliquefaction in farmed Atlantic salmon Salmo salar L, and coho salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch in British Columbia. However, the parasite is not restricted to salmonids and is able to infect myocytes of many species of marine fish. Because of its economic impact, it has been deemed important to develop methods to determine the prevalence and intensity of Kudoa infections in populations of fish. Management decisions can then be made to limit the damage caused by these parasites. If a fish is infected with sufficient numbers of Kudoa parasites and is harvested, flesh deterioration can occur even if the fish is refrigerated or kept on ice.
