A new optical method for the nondestructive testing of the market condition and ripeness of fruit has been developed theoretically and experimentally. The phase parameters of laser-light scattering at the surfaces of various fruit and vegetables have been investigated. The dependence of the degree of spatial coherence on the mechanical defects and hardness of tissues has been determined. This method can be used for the quantitative evaluation of the structural homogeneity of the surfaces of biological organisms and the dynamics of its changes during their life or under the influences of internal and external factors. This enables one to develop new facilities for the nondestructive testing of fruit, analyze their ripeness, and optimize their storage conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
