Abstrakt: An essay is presented on art critic John Ruskin's theories concerning medieval art and architecture as integral to the formative debates concerning "primitive art" and its relation to modern European society. Topics discussed include his ideas concerning the value and uses of the 'savage' Gothic for modern audiences, the book "The Stones of Venice" by him and Ruskin's focus on monumental public works combined with his emphasis on social consequences of image-making.
