The purpose of orthodontic treatment is far beyond improving a patient's dental and facial health. Orthodontics also aims to improve one's self-esteem and quality of life. Since facial beauty is the crucial aspect of social interaction and identity, a deformed individual has increased anxiety adjusting with his life, It also contributes to the Pathology of interaction uneasiness" with these stigmatic individuals. The orthodontist-patient relationship may have a significant impact on treatment outcome and patient satisfaction, thus improving the overall quality of care. Effective communication and an awareness of the psychological issues involved with orthodontic treatment are important in development of a healthy orthodontist- patient relationship which in turn may offer some influence in the various treatment variables, the extent of which is currently unknown. With that in mind, the orthodontist's role appears to encompass more of a psychologist/counselor function at times, rather than solely as a practitioner treating malocclusions. The aim of this article is to review the literature, identifying the psychological aspects that are relevant to clinical orthodontics, highlighting the potential dynamic role an orthodontist plays both as the treating practitioner and a counselor to the patient.
