Teaching Romanian abroad is a noble mission and at the same time, a big challenge. There are 44 teachers of Romanian as a foreign language around the world (Europe, USA, Canada and Asia), all of them coordinated by the Institute of Romanian Language in Bucharest. The former part of this presentation will focus on the history of teaching Romanian at the University of Lisbon and its important role in promoting the Romanian language and values abroad, with a special focus on Portugal. In this context, Professor Buescu's personality will be outlined. Victor Buescu was the first lecturer of Romanian at the University of Lisbon, who gave the course for quite a long period of time. The latter part of the article will focus on the present-day Romanian course at the University of Lisbon: the challenges it has been confronting with and the activities that have been carried out with a view to motivating as many students as possible to study Romanian.
