Abstrakt: The article reveals the conditions under which anti-Jewish violence in Belarus became possible in the early twentieth century. The author comes to the conclusion that the main organizers of the pogroms were members of the local Russian administration, namely, the gendarmerie and police. The number and severity of pogroms directly depended on the position of the local authorities. Pogroms were against the revolutionary movement, which was seen by the local administration as the revolt of the Jews against Russia. In most cases, the level of anti-Jewish aggression among the Belarusian masses was low. The article explores the motives that made people participate in the massacres of the local population.
