Abstrakt: An essay is presented concerning claims that the poetry of Richard Crashaw exemplifies a political theology with royalist sentiments. Topics discussed include the influence of the cultural politics of the Laudian Church on Crashaw's poems, the ways by which Crashaw's poetics of ecstasy allowed him to discuss religious controversies without being criticized for it and the ways by which the poet transforms experiences of ecstasy into religious experiences.
