The article discusses 19th-century Argentine writer José Esteban Antonio Echeverría's iconoclastic representation of virtuous womanhood in his poem "La cautiva" in comparison to the treatment of captive women in two paintings by 19th-century Uruguayan artist Juan Manuel Blanes. Topics covered include Romanticism's influence on Echeverría's explosive imagery, academicism's production of Blanes' contained imagery, and aesthetic values' determination of a captive's freedom. |
