Some registered dietitians in the United States take action to minimize food-related degradation of the natural environment. We sought to discover factors associated with enduring pro-environmental behaviors in practice and to understand whether a relationship exists (if at all) between personal and practice-based behaviors. Using qualitative research interviews, we gathered primary data among a purposive sample of 17 dietitians. The factors that contributed to the enduring pro-environmental behaviors included social support, the desire to contribute to the greater good, and a deep sense of personal satisfaction. Additionally, intertwining personal and professional behaviors were readily found. These data-driven themes coincide with Bandura’s concepts of self-efficacy, described as the belief that one can change outcomes based on one’s actions. Self-efficacy appears to be an important factor for registered dietitians who take action to reduce negative impacts on the natural environment. These results can inform and improve dietetics education and practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
