Our project started with an issue that most academic departments face at some point: Graduating students are missing content that is fundamental to their success. Rather than add a course or revise an existing course to address our omission, we tried adding content using an across-curriculum approach. This approach engaged the entire department (35+ instructors from multiple disciplines) in discussion of our goals for student learning and instructional techniques. We found that faculty members of different subfields of biology understood concepts and terms differently, requiring a change in our initial approach. Following this adjustment, we were able to identify concepts missing or underemphasized in the core biology curriculum at various levels. The outcomes of the project were the development of 22 new student-centered teaching modules and assessment instruments to measure the efficacy of the new teaching modules. Our results show that an across-curriculum approach can have a positive effect on student learning and also provides a mechanism for improving coordination of content across a core group of courses. We present our approach as well as the benefits and challenges of engaging an entire faculty in an across-curriculum project. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
