Practitioner–researcher partnerships have been encouraged as a means of improving police organizations across the world. This support has been reflected in a number of recent publications, most of which have summarized individual projects. These case studies have highlighted several benefits of research partnerships to participating agencies, often presented from the view of the researchers and focussed on those of interest to funding sources in particular. A comprehensive study had not been conducted to examine the benefits of research partnerships to police agencies across USA. We addressed this gap in the extant literature by interviewing 90 police practitioners with partnership experience. We found agencies that had partnered with researchers had realized many benefits from those collaborations. Among the benefits to agencies were novel perspectives and ideas, perceived objectivity and validity, resources, improved policies and procedures, community relations, and public safety. The shortcomings and directions for future research are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER] |
