The article discusses the history and growth of the W.T. Smith Lumber Company of Alabama. Topics include the use of German expeditionary force Afrika Korps and German prisoners of war for during World War II for lumbering work, heavy use of loaders and the risk of injuries due to lack of safety equipment. Also discussed is the use of trucks for transportation, use of powerful saws post World War II and includes comments by Norman F. McGowin, Jr. who was in charge of the company crew in 1959. |
