Abstrakt: The article discusses the Italian national memory and commemoration of Renaissance era Dominican friar Girolamo Savonarola of Florence, Italy during the period of the First Vatican Council of the Catholic Church, from 1869 to 1870. Topics discussed include committees established to erect monuments to Savonarola in Florence during Vatican I, political and religious motives involved in the commemoration of Savonarola, and the impact of Italian nationalism and unification on the Vatican Council.
