With regard to questions of religion the Renaissance philosopher Nicholas of Cusa is known for his concept of "one religion with different rites."1 Nonetheless, his attitude to livingjews must be understood differendy. In his political actions he tried to establish strict measurements against Jews, but in his philosophical chef d'oeuvre De docta ignorantia, in his sermons, and in his mathematical work De reparatione kalendarii he more than once referred to Jewish philosophers. In this article all reference to medieval Jews and Jewish writings are collected and analyzed. Thereby, Nicholas's possible sources are shown. Nonetheless, one point remains open--namely, why he sometimes referred to Maimonides as Rabbi Salomon, which is the name of the Jewish exegete Rashi. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
