Abstrakt: During the fifth century, the Roman Empire underwent dramatic changes. New, ethnically identified polities emerged in the Mediterranean region. Historical research has highlighted the social complexities of this process. Archaeogenetics now shows the remarkably high genetic diversity of post-Roman local societies.
