Abstrakt: Results of surgical treatment of 203 embolisms in arteries of the extremities, including 127 embolisms in intact arteries, and 76 embolisms in atherosclerotic ones, are reported. Post-embolectomy regression of mild ischemia is shown to be unrelated to the condition of the artery. Severe ischemia in atherosclerotic arteries does not benefit from embolectomy alone; it must be supplemented by reconstructive surgery. Removing chronic obstruction to the main flow improved the success rate from 44 to 70%, as compared to embolectomy alone.
