Abstrakt: There is a bi-directional connection between the gut microbiome and the brain. Changes in the composition of the microbiome affect emotions, behavior, and the stress response involved in the pathogenesis of depression. Depression and anxiety are often associated with dysbiosis and inflammatory bowel disease. Dysbiosis enhances stress response and low-grade systemic inflammation, and vice versa. This vicious circle may be responsible for the formation of depression. Antidepressants therapy should be accompanied by the elimination of dysbiosis. For these purposes diet, prebiotics, probiotics and faecal microbiota transplantation can be used. The advantages and disadvantages of each method are considered. The manipulation of microbiome composition has been shown to have great therapeutic potential in the treatment of depression and anxiety.
