Abstrakt: | Phagocytosis - cell ingestion - is an important process confined to eukaryotes. Or is it? Shiratori et al. have discovered the existence of phagocytosis in a planctomycete bacterium, raising new questions about the significance of phagotrophy beyond the realm of eukaryotic life.
