Abstrakt: Strong evidence suggests that virtually all cases of cervical cancer are caused by infection with oncognenic types of human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is also found frequently in neighbouring anogenital epithelia and their neoplastic lesions. This review describes the general aspects of the natural history of anogenital HPV infections and summarises the evidence for an association between HPV and cancers of the uterine cervix, vulva, anus and penis.
