Abstrakt: Until 1814, Jean Hachette (1775-1840) practised as a military pharmacist and then as a hospital pharmacist in Paris. For him both professional and personal aspects of his life were affected by his fondness for gambling. His son, Louis (1800-1860), famous businessman and publisher, tempted to introduce him again to the authorities as military pharmacist in 1830 when he had to resign after a dispute with professeur Duméril (1774-1860). So, Hachette ended his career at the military hospital of Longwy. These facts are attested by archives documents.
