Prevalence was studied of thyroid pathology under conditions of a moderate iodine deficiency in the Kolomyya District of Ivano-Frankovsk Region. Both pediatric and adult population (n = 1245) was examined, residing in the villages of Markivka and Rungury. The prevalence of diffuse goiter among children less than 14 years of age came up to 63.3% falling to 24.2% among those persons aged 56 to 75 years. In the 36 to 55 age bracket, thyroid nodularity has been found to be on the increase. The incidence rate of thyroid carcinoma in the examined population has come to be 0.1%. Children and juveniles are especially vulnerable to iodine deficiency since it is these age populations that have much higher incidence of diffuse goiter. |
