Summary: When the Ottoman empire in the 19th century restored direct rule over Yemen, a subject and a period that has received only the scantest attention, the resulting turmoil came to threaten the security of the entire Arabian Peninsula. Using hitherto unknown archival material, this first hand account of the history of political rivalries and challenges confronting Ottoman Yemen in the nineteenth century will prove an essential tool for scholars and students of the period.'Ottoman Yemen has been the subject of surprisingly little serious work and even less original research. Caesar Farah's new book provides an invaluable treatment of the subject, not least by his extensive use of Ottoman and European archival sources, and the wealth of hitherto inaccessible detail he has uncovered for his readers'.J.E.Peterson, International Institute for Strategic Studies, London. |
