Abstrakt: Summary: The Illuminated Chronicle (formerly called the Vienna Chronicle), an illustrated chronicle, written in 1358, represents the international artistic style at the royal court of Louis I of Hungary. The 147 pictures of the chronicle are great source of information on medieval cultural history, costume, and court life in the fourteenth century. The artistic value of the miniatures is quite high, the characters are drawn with detail and with knowledge of anatomy. 42 of the miniatures are inserted into the text of the volume. The fourteenthcentury chronicle composition, presented here in a new edition and translation is the most complete text of medieval historical tradition in Hungary, going back to the eleventh century and the mythical past of the people. The Illuminated Chronicle is the ninth volume in the Central European Medieval Texts, a LatinEnglish bilingual series whose items are based on the best available critical edition of the original version, usually without full philological apparatus, but with extensive annotations to the translation for readers less familiar with the history and geography of EastCentral Europe.
