Abstract: In Old Sumerian texts, mainly from Fära, there occurs a 'profession' NUNtSUR/ GAR:GU. By comparison of this designation (which also can be iound in Texts from gu-sur within the administration. At least in the older times the title furtherm as gu-sur a te same me. o evence wasoever or e eren wrngs of the profession from later sources is known to the writer, and he has not been able to provide a solution for the element NUN in the oldest texts, or the variation SUR/GAR. Still, it can be assumed to be reasonably certain that NUN:SUR/GAR:GU, GAR:GU:SUR, sur:gu and gu-sur represent diachronic variants of the same profession, which cannot be defined exactly, but probably designates a higher official responsible for field surveying. |
