Abstract: Fast neutron reactors are again becoming popular in nuclear energy production. In the first part of this article, we summarize their main features, advantages, and challenges in their design, as well as their past and outlook. The second part is dedicated to description of the design and main features of HeFASTo, which is a Czech concept for a modular gascooled fast reactor (GFR), developed by UJV Rez, a.s.. This concept aims to have maximum versatility for heat and electricity production, hydrogen production, and utilization of reprocessed nuclear fuel, whilst keeping excellent fuel economy, so that almost no spent fuel is produced. Its development is supported by knowledge from long term GFR research and development programs in the Czech Republic. |
