Abstract: The Philosophical Institute in Pilsen existed between the years 1804-1849. As an institution of higher education, it played an important role in the cultural and intellectual history not only of Pilsen but also of the whole region. Almost 3,000 students attended it during the first half of the 19th century. Their origins varied considerably. The students came from various backgrounds - cities, towns, and villages. Even so, some similarities can be found among the Institute’s students. This article aims to contribute to the study of the history of the Philosophical Institute and its role in Bohemia through an analysis of the origin and social structure of the students in Pilsen. |
