Abstrakt: Abstract: The iconoclastic scholars like John the Grammarian and Christian Hellenists like Leo the Philosopher and Leo Choirosphactes were drawn to the neo-Platonic conception of the universe. This doctrine was favorable to the study of nature or, at least, aroused interest in nature and the structure of the terrestrial world. Speaking of the afterlife, John the Grammarian, Leo the Philosopher and Leo Choirosphactes stressed the contemplation of God as light and not the resurrection of the dead in deified bodies. Speaking of the earthly life, they insisted on the contemplation of all existing things as a necessary degree on the way towards the knowledge of God. Each of them had his own circle of disciples and admirers and they played an important role in the transmission of Hellenism in Byzantium.
