Abstract: Agricultural fields were heavily damaged by the disasters accompanying the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011. Yet, the local farmers used innovative skills to utilize their local knowledge to revive their agricultural industries. Farmers might own their own lands, but they work collectively and help one another to maximize the harvest and production because farming population in Japan is also in decline. Based on extensive field research in Miyagi Prefecture, the article explores how in the post-disaster setting farmers need to be adaptable yet respectful of one another, pointing out that because of their knowledge about the land, the climate, and the environment, they could combine the traditional practices with innovative technology. The article shows successful cases where the government funds were utilized to revitalize the local economy, and scholars played significant contributions by mediating the two sides. |
