Abstract: In 1587 Joseph Heintz the Elder visited Florence for a few months before passing to Venice for a longer time. There he chiefly draw sculptures by Michelangelo and Giambologna preferably after nowadays unknown or lost bozzetti. Undoubtedly, he met Giambologna personally in his studio. Giambologna’s art works Nessus and Dejanira, the Cesarini Venus, the Rape of a Sabine woman and a Crouching Venus appear in Heintz’s works. The history of these works is utes with his drawings a material useful even to the Giambologna-research which never made use of it in the past. With the Dresden Venus, Cupido and Apollo only a single painted work by him can be determined as from this Florentine time. This small painting on copper plate is discussed with its copies or replicas on the art market in presence of the Giambologna’s background. |
