Abstrakt: Abstract: a1_In this study the author reflects different aspects of the renowned book by John Rawls, Theory of Justice, which she translated into French (John Rawls, Thedrie de la justice, Le Seuil, Paris 1987). She asks in what way it has been possible to believe that liberal thinking has allegedly entirely eliminated the "reality of politics, power and violence". This alleged elimination - even though there is something true in it - was a result of thinking which was in itself very critical to liberalism: the author presents Carl Schmitt, a well-known theoretician of conservative political thinking, as an example in this respect. Where does Rawls’ political thinking find itself with regard to the massive criticism of liberalism? John Rawls was sometimes accused of the fact that his book provided a certain political theory above all to social democracy. On the contrary, C. Audard endeavours at proving that Rawls’ theory of justice is well compatible with the best tradition of liberal political philosophy. The author stresses - after having outlined the conception of politics in the tradition of liberal thinking in its main lines - that this tradition eliminates any normative discourse which "would justify the use of violence or restrict individual freedoms" under the pretext of an endangerment of community. It is essential for the liberal theory of politics to base oneself on the citizens’ opinions which "do not bind the personal philosophical and religious inclinations of any of them in anything". Rawls’ conception of politics corresponds perfectly to this principle, while it stresses the main idea, i.e. that the individuals are free and mutually equal "in accordance with their moral properties”. This main idea provides, on the one hand, the priority of morality over property, similarly as the priority of politics over a normative, i.e. philosophical discourse, on the other.
