Abstract: This paper examines seven Czech translations of Goethe´s poem Wandrers Nachtlied (2) to show thet the translation process, aiming at an optimal solution of a sbujective interpretation of the original poem, is an exceptionally complex unique system of motivational relationships operating between the elements of all the structures of the text. The interdepedence of the individual structures is realized in the translation process mainly by the device that, from the verse pair or greater number of verses which are versologically directly linked, the translator as a rule choses one verse as the motivating one; the remaining verse (or verses) of the pair (or grater number) then become motivated verses. The motivated verses exhibit greater transformational intervention, or a greater degree of departure from the source meaning, than do the motivating verses. |
