Abstract: Ezra the Priest or the Scribe is a biblical figure who reintroduced the Torah in Jerusalem after his return from exile in Babylon (5th century B. C). It is not known where he died. There were actually several of Ezra's graves in the Near East. One of them, in South Iraq, was visited by Judah Alharizi (13th century) who wrote a ma-qama (rhymed prose) about it. The maqama includes the traditions about this place as known from the itinerary of Petahya of Regensburg (12th century) and three poems. One of them is dedicated to the prophet Ezekiel, whose grave Alharizi also visited in Iraq. This is the first Czech translation of this maqama. |
