Abstrakt: Abstract: Czech Republic was affected by two disastrous floods in a very short period of five years. The case from July 1997 in Moravia and Silesia became the "flood of the 20th century". Whether the extreme from August 2002 in Bohemia will become the "flood of the 21st century" will be known only later to our descendants. Because the 20th century was relatively poor in great waters as compared with the 19th century, the damages and casualties were undoubtedly greatly contributed to also by the loos of historical memory, particularly so in 1997. In order to enliven the historical memory, to search analogies and generalizations for the future it is therefore necessary to document the floods, their impacts and interactions reaching all available sources of information as far in the past as possible. It is therefore an urgent requirement to have available a comprehensive survey on historical floods even before the beginning of regular hydrological measurements (which are relatively short-termed from the secular point of view). A number of European countries adopted preventive measures after the recent floods, taking into account lessons learnt from the historically-geographical investigations. In addition to hydrological series of observations the documentation of historical floods dwells in the preinstrumental era not only on various historical printed and manuscript sources but also on historical maps, preserved pictures (engravings, photographs), on preserved material monuments in the field and so on.
