Abstrakt: | Abstract: Intergroup contact is considered one of the most effective ways to reduce prejudice. The review summarizes current developments in intergroup contact theory. The authors first focus on direct contact between people with different group membership (i.e., face-to-face encounters). They explain processes underlying the link between contact and prejudice (i.e., mediators) and conditions that enhance the effect of contact on prejudice (i.e., moderators). The effect of direct experiences with members of a certain social group on attitudes towards this group is called the primary transfer effect of intergroup contact. In society, formal and informal obstacles hinder encounters between people from different groups. Secondary transfer effect of intergroup contact describes the effect of contact with members of one group not only on attitudes towards this very group (i.e., primary transfer of contact) but also to other, not encountered, outgroups. Except for secondary transfer of contact, indirect intergroup contact can be employed to reduce prejudice in people with limited opportunities for face-to-face encounters with outgroup members. Indirect intergroup contact subsumes: a) extended contact: awareness that ingroup members have a close relationship with an outgroup member; b) vicarious contact: observing interactions between ingroup and outgroup members; c) imagined contact: mental simulation of contact with outgroup members. Intergroup contact theory can be employed in interventions aimed at ameliorating relations between different groups in nowadays diverse societies. |
