Abstract: Recently a large canvas of the Madonna and Child with Music-Making Angels, painted by Dirck de Quade van Ravesteyn, appeared on the art market. In the canvas Ravesteyn gave a prominent position to the angel with the lute, responding directly to one of the outstanding works in the imperial collections, Dürer's Feast of the Rose Garlands, which Rudolf II acquired in 1606. Ravesteyn's fascination with Dürer was far from unusual at the Prague court of Rudolf II - many artists working for the Emperor returned to the oeuvre of the great Nürnberg master. Albrecht Dürer was also admired by Rudolf himself, if we are to judge by the latter's attempts to acquire his works, culminating in the purchase of The Feast of the Rose Garlands in 1606. |
